You don’t think it actually happens until it happens to you

You don’t think it actually happens until it happens to you.

You are a successful, driven, business-minded woman with more than enough potential. Spot the problem with that sentence? Oh yeah – woman.

It’s no secret that being a female corporate lawyer on Bay Street is difficult. Being a lawyer is difficult. But being a woman playing the role of “a man’s job” – that’s difficult.

And you don’t think it actually happens until it happens to you.

Until your shine and your sparkle dull. Until your passion and ambition fades.

You don’t think it actually happens until it happens to you.

And you may not believe it. Because everyone is ambitious right? Everyone hustles. Things like this – challenging situations, discriminatory behaviour – it happens.

People go through things, but we persevere. We grow. And we learn from it.

But as a young woman on Bay Street – you don’t think it actually happens until it happens to you.

So here’s to all the women breaking the stigma. Crossing into unchartered territory that women have been in for YEARS but is still considered a man’s job. You, girl, are more valuable than they think – more valuable than they know.

If only they had given you a shot.

And as a young woman on Bay Street – you don’t think it actually happens until it happens to you.

But it does. It happens to you.

And it sucks.

And maybe they didn’t do it on purpose. Maybe they just didn’t know how to deal with a successful, driven, business-minded woman.

But if it happens to you, it means only one thing.

It exists. It happens to other women. And if it happens to other women, well, you’re not okay with that.

And it doesn’t happen everywhere. It doesn’t happen to everyone. We’re changing.

But if it happens to just one woman. One young female associate. Well, you’re not okay with that.

Luckily, you are a successful, driven, business-minded woman with more than enough potential.

Luckily, you are more valuable than they think – more valuable than they know.

And luckily, no man can dull your sparkle.

You don’t think it actually happens until it happens to you.

But it happens.

Let’s change that.
