Nicki Minaj is a regular at New York Fashion Week and sits front row at many of the shows. This year, however, she didn’t just sit idly by. Rather, she called out designer Philipp Plein for cultural appropriation.
“Thank you Philipp Plein for including our culture,” she told The Cut, sarcastically. However, this is particularly surprising because Plein has been known to highlight diversity at his shows.
Nevertheless, Nicki is not one to remain silent on such issues. In fact, in advance of the 2015 VMAs, she stated that if she were “a different ‘kind of’ artist,” “Anaconda” would’ve been nominated for Video of the Year.
Furthermore, she also called out Miley Cyrus for appropriating black culture in a New York Times interview in the same year. She stated, “If you want to enjoy our culture and our lifestyle, bond with us, dance with us, have fun with us, twerk with us, rap with us, then you should also want to know what affects us, what is bothering us, what we feel is unfair to us”.
Well done, Nicki. This just goes to show that attending the NYFW shows doesn’t necessarily indicate agreement with its flaws.
